Cultivated citrus, the crop that shaped Florida’s economy and landscape for 150 years, took root in Florida by the mid-1800s. As thousands of farmers arrived to plant and harvest Florida’s agricultural gold, inexpensive land was drained and planted with rows of fruit trees that stretched to the horizon.
Somehow, all of this fruit had to be marketed and sold.
Our exhibit features two dozen advertisements dating back to the late 19th century, showing the many imaginative means that advertisers employed to promote Florida’s most important agricultural product.
