Dr. Henry Nehrling and His Gotha Legacy
Winter Garden Heritage Foundation
21 East Plant Street
On property he purchased in the German colony of Gotha, Florida in 1885, Wisconsin-born Henry Nehrling established Palm Cottage Gardens and began to experiment with both native and introduced plants. He went on to create a multitude of plant hybrids that significantly helped Florida’s foliage industry to flourish. Nehrling’s estate, considered one of Florida’s first botanical gardens, was rooted in horticultural end environmental traditions that led to the official re-opening of Nehrling Gardens in 2011.
